"The house is endangered in another work, however. Driving Wedges, depicts a simple house which has sprouted arms which wield mallets directed at three wedges inserted into the peak of its roof. Thus, the real threat to home's stability and security is revealed to be a destructive force which comes from within. Surls refers here to the adage 'A house divided against itself cannot stand,' thus making a powerful metaphor for the rifts that can undermine any human relationship."

-Eleanor Heartney, from Splendora: A Love Story in the publication "James Surls: The Splendora Years, 1977-1997."
