"Lawndale housed the undergraduate and graduate paintings studio, the sculpture department, which was studios and a big shop, and the Lawndale annex.... James just had a huge vision of what the art department and the entire university should be. He is a visionary, and he imagined a giant laboratory, as he called it, where students could run things."

--Michael Galbreth & Jack Massing (The Art Guys), from an interview with Terrie Sultan, 2004.
