"His sculpture A Look through the thorn tree, is an elegantly spare construction consisting of a suspended spiral form incised with eyes and radiating thorns. It expresses the notion of the pain which is inherent in experience, with the thorns riddling the life force a constant reminder that life and consciousness are inseparable from hurt."

-Eleanor Heartney, from Splendora: A Love Story in the publication "James Surls: The Splendora Years, 1977-1997."
